Schumacher to start No. 4 when Matco Tools race continues in September

Englishtown, NJ (May 21): Tony Schumacher came to Englishtown with a game plan to take home a victory at one of his biggest supporter's own race. Instead, he leaves only knowing that when he returns September 8-9 to complete the Matco Tools Spring SuperNationals, that he will start from the No. 4 qualifying position.

The event was eventually postponed on Sunday due to weather and an apparent tire wear problem on Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars. "The track is just too good," said Schumacher, "these cars need to spin the tires at the top end of the track."

"With the low temperatures (track and air) and the sticky surface it was pulling pieces of rubber right out of the tires. We couldn't take any chances on anyone getting hurt. This was the right decision to make and it's obvious the rain is here to stay."

The planned schedule when racing resumes in September is to have two "test& tune" sessions for teams to work on their car setup on Friday and Final eliminations will take place on Saturday.

Starting No. 4 is nothing new for Schumacher. Seven times in 1999, he was the No. 4 qualifier and four times already this year, including Englishtown, he has taken that spot on the ladder. "We would love to be No. 1," said Schumacher, "but Larry Dixon and Dick LaHaie are really hot right now."

"Larry's a great driver and Dick is one of the best tuners out here. They are definitely going to be tough to beat the rest of the season."

Schumacher and Team Exide head straight to Ennis, Texas for the Castrol Nationals presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts.
