TONY PEDREGON ROCKETS TO FINAL ROUND
Englishtown, N.J. (June 24, 2007) -- Tony Pedregon, pilot of the Q Power NHRA Nitro Funny Car, found the consistency necessary to propel him to the Final Round at the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationalspresented by R2B2 Motors at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., June 21-24, 2007. Pedregon gained enough points to advance to 4th in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship points.
Pedregon took advantage of the cool (87degree) track conditions for Friday's 2nd round qualifying session to post a solid 4.780, 6th place qualifying effort. Pedregon, the 2003 NHRA Nitro Funny Car World Champion, scored elimination round wins over Cruz Pedregon, Robert Hight and Tony Bartone, and then met Tommy Johnson, Jr. in the Final Round, Pedregon's 2nd Final Round appearance this year.
Pedregon was on the gas against Johnson, Jr. in the Final Round.b^0x001cIt started to get loose and sashayed around a bit, but this is summer time and we expect to have these hot conditions," stated Pedregon. "We are going to address the tire slippage down track. The key during these summer months will be in not using all the power, sliding the clutch and making full runs. It's a good day anytime you get close to winning the race. Winning is much better, but when we put things in perspective we gained some ground. In the big picture, this was a good weekend for us."
In the first elimination round on Sunday, Pedregon, the No. 6 qualifier, faced his brother and teammate, Cruz Pedregon who qualified in the No. 11 spot. b^0x001cYou better be on your game when you face Cruz," stated Tony Pedregon. "He is always a tough competitor."JJThe Pedregons rocketed off the line with nearly identical reaction times; Cruz .062 vs. Tony's .079.Tony Pedregon's Q Power Funny Car jumped ahead when Cruz Pedregon's Advance Auto Parts Impala mixed up the cylinders and blew the blower belt at the 1,000 ft mark.Tony Pedregon zipped past for the round win, a 5.008 to Cruz Pedregon's losing 5.211 Elapsed Time.
With summer's extreme track temperatures in full force, Pedregon and his Q Power team were ready for the slippery track in round two. Pedregon gave up lane choice to Team Force's, Robert Hight.Pedregon launched hard, and then both cars began to smoke the tires. With a blip of the throttle, Pedregon was back under traction and went on to the round win with a 5.436 ET against Hight's losing 7.536.
In the third elimination round, Pedregon was right down the groove with a 5.028 ET at 306.12 mph on his way to eliminating Tony Bartone.
"We had some very extreme track conditions with track temperatures in the second round and in the semi-finals reaching as high as 124 degrees," said Pedregon. "Our Q Power and Dickie [Venables, crew chief] are really good under these extreme conditions and today was no exception.I am really proud of my guys (crew).I'll put them up against anyone else's crew- these guys are professionals."
