JOHNSON JR. DRIVES SKOAL RACING FLOPPER TO NO. 10 POSITION SATURDAY AT ENGLISHTOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 17, 2006) One week after posting the third quickest Funny Car pass in NHRA history (4.672 seconds), veteran nitro driver Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to the No. 10 qualifying position Saturday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park after recording a run of 4.836-seconds.
Entering the final day of qualifying for the 37th annual K&N Filters Supernationals on the outside looking in; No. 17 in the 16-car order; the veteran flopper driver used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to race his Skoal Racing Chevy to a performance of 4.836 seconds at 321.73 mph to position Johnson in the No. 10 qualifying spot. Johnson recorded the second quickest run of the third qualifying session to move up seven positions in the Funny Car field. Johnson then drove to a run of 4.918-seconds on a hot Raceway Park quarter mile to complete qualifying at the storied New Jersey track.
"We had a rough weekend," Johnson said. "We came in here with the new car and it wasn't reacting like we wanted it to run, so we had to make a decision to switch chassis back to the other car in the middle of qualifying. That's a pretty big move to make in the middle of a race. It paid off. The car went right back to where we were. The guys did a great job with our backs against the wall under extremely tough conditions today. We've got a solid car for race day and I'm confident heading into Sunday."
The Iowa native will battle No. 7 qualifier Del Worsham in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson is 4-15 in his career versus Worsham.
