Valspar Refinish Viper snake bit in opening round
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- One might say that Rickie Smith, from King, N.C., driver of the Team Koretsky Valspar Refinish/Bucks County Kawasaki/KPK Motorsports Pro Mod Dodge Viper, was snake bit as he squared off against Fred Hahn, from Elma, N.Y., in the opening round of today's elimination during the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions in Englishtown, N.J.
Smith, with the lone nitrous assisted engine in today's field, damaged a motor during qualifying and was forced to a back up for the final qualifying sessions and for the opening round.
Smith's Viper uncoiled from the line and took a slight advantage over Hahn's Corvette. By half track, Hahn had forged into the lead by .047 seconds. He increased the lead over Smith to .1508 seconds by the finish line. Hahn crossed the finish line strip in 6.186 seconds. Smith covered the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park quarter-mile in 6.349 seconds.
It was an all Chevrolet final round as Hahn's Corvette advanced to the finals and faced off against Troy Critchley, from St, Joseph, Mich., driving a '53 Chevy. Hahn took all the marbles in the final round to win the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at Englishtown.
