ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - - At this weekend's NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions, Kenny Koretsky, from Richboro, Pa., hopes the home track advantage at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., will give Team Koretsky their first win of the 2002 season.
"It's always good to race at Englishtown," says Koretsky. "Not only do you get to sleep in your own bed, all your friends are close enough that they can spend time at the track enjoying what I love to do -- race. Also, we will be meeting and entertaining new friends, who, as guest of our primary marketing partner Valspar Refinish, will join us this weekend.
"Every race weekend the goals for Team Koretsky are to go out and qualify both Valspar Refinish/Snap-on Tools/Cyclo Industries-Rally Wax cars, then go rounds. This weekend, in front of our friends and guests, we want to step it up a notch and win this event.
"Both cars will be back to full race trim and power. Frank Iaconio has refurbished our two primary engines and they are ready to compete with the best the Pro Stock class can throw at us.
"Additionally, I have taken delivery on the latest and greatest Chevy Cavalier from the chassis shop of Jerry Bickel and will debut it at this race. I'm real excited about racing this Valspar Refinish/Snap-on Tools/ Bucks County Kawasaki/Rally Wax Cavalier in NHRA national event competition. After testing this past weekend, I am confident that this new car is another step in the right direction of making Team Koretsky a viable contender the remainder of the season.
The Team Koretsky primary car -- the Valspar Refinish/Snap-on Tools/Cyclo Industries Grand Am -- will be driven, as it has all season, by fifth-year pro Richie "The Kid" Stevens. The New Orleans driver is the defending Pro Stock champion for the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions. He turned back Mark Pawuk in last year's final round insuring at least one national event title in each of the first four seasons in which he competed. Stevens, with seven career final-round appearances and four career wins, began racing Pro Stock cars in 1998
Stevens hopes Team Koretsky's fortunes will turn around at Koretsky's home track. Said Stevens, "We need some luck. I've always had good luck at Englishtown. I've got a pretty good record there, it's always been good to me. Going in there like we've been performing lately, we need to change our momentum and turn things around. Being Kenny's home track, Englishtown is a good track to make that happen. I'm looking forward to Englishtown being the turning point for the season."
The race, the eighth of 23 events on the NHRA POWERade® Drag Racing Series, will get underway with professional qualifying Friday and Saturday, May 17th and 18th. Final eliminations are set for Sunday, May 19th at 11 a.m.
