Geoffrion Loses in First Round

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., May 18, 2003 - Performing in front of many friends and relatives, Scott Geoffrion had hoped to put on a good Pro Stock show for them.

He did, establishing personal bests in both elapsed time (6.728 seconds) and speed (204.82 mph) in Hurley Blakeney's Nitro Fish Ford Escort ZX2, but superb weather conditions contributed to a number of impressive times.

Geoffrion started eliminations from the No. 9 slot and squared off against No. 8 Terry Adams, who also qualified at 6.728 seconds. Geoffrion had the lead off the starting line when a broken engine rocker arm slowed the ZX2 and Adams won with a 6.745 to a 7.625, sending the Mahwah, N.J., native to the sidelines.

"The rocker arm broke on the burnout and the motor didn't sound right at the starting line," Geoffrion said. "It bogged real badly at the starting line when I left the line. The atmospheric conditions were so phenomenal and the motors were making so much horsepower that it puts a strain on the valve train. The good news is the broken rocker arm didn't destroy the engine."

Greg Anderson set new Pro Stock elapsed time (6.670 seconds) and speed (207.18 mph) records during the cool, overcast weekend.

Although disappointed by the early exit, Geoffrion and the team move on to Topeka, Kan., for this weekend's O'Reilly Summer Nationals, the second of three races in a row.
