TOP FUEL *Cristen Powell, 18, became the second-youngest winner of a professional title at an NHRA national event. Jeb Allen won the Top Fuel title at this event in 1972 at 17. *Cristen Powell is the sixth woman to win a pro title at an NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series national event. The others are Top Fuel drivers Shirley Muldowney, Lucille Lee, Lori Johns and Shelly Anderson, and Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Angelle Seeling. *Gary Scelzi remains the only Top Fuel driver to win at least one round in all eight races this season. Scelzi, from Fresno, Calif., has advanced to at least the semifinals at every event in the Team Winston Dragster. *Joe Amato continued his trend of all-or-nothing performances this season with a first-round loss in the Keystone Automotive Warehouse Dragster. Amato, from Old Forge, Pa., has three victories and a runner-up finish in eight races this season. He lost in the first round at the other four races. FUNNY CAR *Kenji Okazaki, from Tokyo, became the first person born outside of North America to win a professional title at an NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series national event. *Mark Oswald became the 10th member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars with his pass of 4.981 seconds in the In- N-Out Dodge Avenger. Oswald, from Houma, La., earned $1,000. PRO STOCK *Denver Nuggets power forward Tom Hammonds failed to qualify in his NHRA season debut in the Winnebago Oldsmobile Cutlass. Hammonds will compete in the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series until late September, when he joins Nuggets' training camp. PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE *Matt Hines set an NHRA elapsed-time national record of 7.290 seconds on the Vance & Hines Suzuki GSXR. Hines, from Whittier, Calif., broke his record of 7.295 set at the Pennzoil Nationals presented by Trak Auto last month at Richmond, Va., Hines earned $1,000 from the MBNA World Record Club. -30- 5/20/97-EJ6-077
