QUICK DAY FOR LUCAS AT ENGLISHTOWN

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J (June 19) -- Morgan Lucas driving Joe Amato's Top Fuel dragster suffered his second consecutive first round loss in Sunday's K&N Filters SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. After last week's disappointing performance at Route 66 Raceway in nearby Chicago, the Lucas Oil team knows it needs to rebound to keep them in point contention for the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel championship as the season approaches the halfway point.

On his run, Morgan lost traction first and tried valiantly to catch his opponent, Cory McClenathan after he also started spinning his tires further down the quarter-mile track. It was to no avail and Lucas had to give up the good fight and coasted to the finish line with a time of 10.710 seconds at a speed of 78.85 mph to Cory Mac's tire-smoking effort of 5.476 seconds, 254.09 mph.

"It's still unexpected every time we go into Sunday and it's been a different racetrack than it was from Friday and Saturday," said Lucas. "The air was better today and we thought we backed the engine down enough, but apparently we didn't and it just smoked the tires. I smoke them early and Cory smoked them late. I pedaled to try to catch him and I couldn't get it to hook up. That's racing!"

Despite his recent string of bad luck, he still maintains his position of fifth in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel standings with 645 points. Six of the top 10-point contenders were defeated in the first round of eliminations.

The Sears-Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis Mo. will be the next stop on the 23-race NHRA tour. It will mark the 12th race of the season and will be the only nighttime event of the year. Qualifying starts on Friday, June 24 at 6 p.m. CDT with the green light start of the race at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26.
