ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (May 19, 2001) - Mopar Parts/Cornwell Tools Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car driver Dean Skuza heads into tomorrow's Matco Tools SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway from the third-qualifying position.
Skuza clocked the second-quickest time of the season for Skuza Motorsports with a 4.833-second elapsed time at 312.21 mph during Friday's second session. The two-time NHRA national event winner will take on Whit Bazemore in round one.
"The track tightened a little bit from the third session," said Skuza, who clocked a 4.885-second elapsed time in his final qualifying pass after smoking the tires in round three. "We just wanted to go down the track. We could have gone for the top spot, but we just wanted to tune for tomorrow's hotter conditions. The track was cooler in that last session, and it wouldn't have served a purpose if we went out with a set up that was perfect for those conditions. We want to win the race tomorrow."
Alderman & Osborne Ready for Sunday
Darrell Alderman drove his Hemi-powered Mopar Parts Dodge R/T to two solid laps during the second day of qualifying and maintained the fifth position. The three-time Winston Pro Stock World Champion ran a 6.855-second elapsed time at 200.08 mph during Friday's second session.
Alderman will face off against a familiar foe in Bruce Allen in a round-one eliminator.
"We made a couple of pretty solid runs today," Alderman stated. "We were trying to come up with a good race day set up because we felt the conditions will be the same tomorrow. It was a little hot and humid."
Alderman's teammate Mark Osborne, who also pilots a Hemi-powered Mopar Parts-sponsored Dodge R/T, also played with the tune up today. Osborne, who is one of the hottest drivers on the Pro Stock circuit with a final and two semifinal round appearances in the last three NHRA national events, will take on fourth-qualifier Ron Krisher in round one.
"I'm looking for good reaction and elapsed time numbers tomorrow," said the Abingdon, Va. resident. "My main goal is to go a couple of rounds and gain in the points. It would be ideal to face my teammate in the final though."
Alderman and Osborne are on opposite sides of the bracket.
Morgan Changes Direction
Larry Morgan had been struggling to put the pieces in place on his Dodge Motorsports R/T Pro Stock entry. Despite the mechanical woes, Morgan managed to grab the 13th-qualifying slot for tomorrow's elimination rounds.
After posting a 6.892-second lap at 199.94 mph during Friday's second session, the Newark, Ohio resident borrowed a Hemi engine from Nickens Racing prior to the final qualifier. The move solidified Morgan in his preparation for a round one match up with Kurt Johnson.
"We made a pretty good run with David's (Nickens) engine in there," Morgan said. "We've been having difficulties with the carburetor. I sputtered a little bit in low gear, but it picked it up through the back half. Overall, we have a good feeling about Sunday."
Morgan will run the Nickens powerplant on Sunday.
Smith Stays in 10th
A day of experimenting allowed future semi-factory backed Mopar driver Rickie Smith to tune for tomorrow's eliminations. The King, N.C., resident clicked off a 6.869-second pass at 200.59 mph in Friday's second session and will start 10th tomorrow.
Smith has a round-one eliminator with Jim Yates.
"We made some nice runs today and did a little experimenting," Smith commented. "We made one run with a lot of base in the clutch and one without. I'm going to sit down tonight and evaluate what combination we'll use."
Kenny Koretsky, who owns and drives Team Koretsky, missed the show with a 6.936/198.26 mph.
"I blew it Saturday night," Koretsky stated. "I over-revved first gear and ran a 6.93."
