Dixon Races to No. 9 Spot at Englishtown

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 19, 2004) -- Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 9 qualifying position Saturday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park after recording a weekend-best elapsed time of 4.710 seconds.

Dixon drove his Dick LaHaie-tuned rail to the 4.710 at 310.34 mph pass on his first qualifying attempt of the weekend on Friday afternoon. The Don Prudhomme-owned dragster made two qualifying attempts on Saturday, recording a performance of 6.090 at 146.08 on Saturday's first run on a sizzling Raceway Park drag strip that surpassed 125 degrees. On his fourth and final effort of the weekend, the two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion recorded a run of 4.785 at 304.80.

"The track conditions are really difficult," LaHaie said. "It's a combination of a lot of things that make the conditions tough, but everybody has to fight the same thing. Hopefully, we learned what not to do for the first round on Sunday."

Dixon, who eyes a fourth consecutive victory on Father's Day, will face off against No. 8 qualifier Doug Herbert in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations. Dixon has an 18-4 career mark versus Herbert and a 1-1 record against the North Carolina driver this season.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the K&N Filters SuperNationals at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, June 19 and show two hours of final elimination coverage at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, June 20.
