ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., (June 24, 2007) -- With two tremendous first round upset wins, Doug Kalitta and Dave Grubnic advanced their Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragsters to quarter-final appearances during final eliminations at the ProCare Rx NHRA SuperNationals at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., Sunday.
Doug, who qualified No. 14 in the 16-car eliminations field, matched up against the No. 3 qualifier Clay Millican as Top Fuel eliminations began Sunday morning. On paper, the round was Millican's to win, but Doug and his Mac Tools team defied the odds and put Millican's car in the trailer with a convincing upset win, 4.655 seconds, 325.37 mph to 5.066 sec., 254.09 mph.
In the quarterfinals, Doug faced off against Larry Dixon. The two venerable nitro vets have 68 combined Top Fuel title trophies between them both. Doug got away from the starting line first (.056 sec. to .085 sec.), but then his Mac Tools rail started losing valuable traction on the hot and slippery drag strip at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park around 400 feet down the quarter-mile and that let Dixon get around him for the win, 5.227 sec., 217.25 mph to 4.669 sec., 313.80 mph.
Doug dropped from 12th to 13th in POWERade championship points.
Team Kalitta driver and native Australian Dave Grubnic, driver of the Zantrex-3 Top Fueler, pulled off an even bigger first-round upset than his colleague Doug. Grubnic, the No. 16 qualifier, ended the race day early for the No. 1 qualifier and defending Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher by making the quickest lap of the weekend in the Zantrex-3 rail to get the win light, 4.686 sec., 318.54 mph to 5.383 sec., 174.87 mph.
Grubnic then paired up with Doug Herbert in the quarterfinals. The two dragster aces put on a great side-by-side race for the packed grandstands of NHRA fans in Englishtown. Herbert was able to just barely edge past Grubnic at the finish line stripe to take the win away from the Aussie, 4.770 sec., 307.93 mph to 4.699 sec., 310.27 mph.
Grubnic moved up one position in points from 8th to 7th.
Doug's Cousin Scott Kalitta, driver of the DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car, was defeated in round one of eliminations for the fuel coupes by Jeff Arend, 4.965 sec., 309.27 mph to 5.141 sec., 267.27 mph.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 7 position for eliminations. She advanced to the semifinals.
