ENGLISHTOWN, New Jersey --- Ashley Force Hood grabbed her fourth No. 1 qualifier of 2009 Full Throttle Drag Racing Series when rain shortened the 40th annual United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Raceway Park. Her Castrol GTX Mustang made three solid runs including a stellar 4.07 second run during the night session on Friday.
"Thankfully all three of our runs were good runs. We'll take any of our qualifying runs on race day. We would have liked to gotten a fourth run. We are just as content to go into race day with three runs. We'll see what we can do here at Englishtown tomorrow," said Force Hood.
"We are just going to take it one round at a time. You are not always number one because you had three great runs. Sometimes you are number one because you had one stellar run. I think our confidence comes from having three good runs. One of them was in the night session and we got the number one spot but as a whole we have made it down the track every run. We will try and do that every time down the track tomorrow. I've run down both lanes. I don't have any issues with either lane so I am very confident about tomorrow," added Force Hood.
By out qualifying Tony Pedregon Force Hood moved into a tie for second place in the Full Throttle point standings. She and Pedregon are only 54 points behind points leader Ron Capps. That translates to less than three rounds of racing on race day.
The past two seasons have been dotted with historically significant milestones for Force Hood but today she accomplished a unique feat in NHRA drag racing when she and her sister Brittany Force, No. 1 qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster, became the first sisters to qualify number one at the same NHRA national event.
"I am really excited about that. I was hoping we could keep our number one spot. Luckily we were both able to hold on. I am real proud of her. I think it is really neat that there are two women leading those classes in New Jersey," beamed Force Hood.
Ashley Force Hood will race Jack Beckman in the first round. This will be the fifth time these two drivers have crossed paths. They have split 2-2 in their previous four races.
Mike Neff and the Ford Drive One Mustang will race veteran Jerry Toliver in the first round as the No. 4 qualifier with hopes of evening his record at 1-1. Going rounds will be critical for Neff as he tries to break into the Top Ten. He will be relying on good friend Jim Head to defeat Cruz Pedregon in their first round match-ups of No. 8 versus No. 9 qualifiers, respectfully. Currently Neff is nine points behind Pedregon out of the No. 10 spot.
John Force will race Robert Hight in an all John Force Racing first round match-up. Hight will have the upper hand as the No. 4 qualifier. Neither Force nor Hight made decent runs during the only qualifying session today.
