TOLIVER OUSTED EARLY IN CLOSE RACE IN E-TOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 22, 2008) -- Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car driver Jerry Toliver was defeated today by a mere seven inches by Melanie Troxel in the first round of Funny Car eliminations at the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Toliver made a great run with a 4.914-second elapsed time at 308.92 mph, but it wasn't enough to hold off Troxel's 4.935/317.79, as she barely nipped the Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge at the finish line.
"I made a mental error up there," said Toliver. "I put on both bulbs (on the starting-line tree) and when I did that I was staged extremely shallow, which gives you a better elapsed time. Melanie ran a 4.93 to my 4.91 and she was obviously staged deeper. So, if we would have beaten them or not, we'll never know. It was an error and I didn't mean to do that. The Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge dropped a cylinder down track a little bit and we lost by 13 ten-thousandths of a second. We all had a lot on our minds today. I wasn't trying to play a game up there with Melanie.
"The Rockstar Energy Drink boys did a hell of a job this weekend. I'm extremely happy with the performance of the Rockstar car. We ran well and that was a nice lap today. We made a couple of nice runs this weekend. I think we're getting closer and closer. We're still in the hunt."
Toliver was racing with a heavy heart after the death of his friend and fellow Funny Car competitor Scott Kalitta following a top-end crash during the final round of qualifying on Saturday.
"Scotty was a very, very good friend of mine," said Toliver. "He was a great guy and a great husband and father. I still can't believe this happened to him. I'm going to miss him dearly."
Toliver remains 16th in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car point standings, with 352 points.
