ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., May 20, 2001 - It was, in Doug Herbert's words, "aggravating" to lose to Doug Kalitta in the NHRA SuperNationals quarterfinals Sunday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park during an event that had cool weather, then hot weather, then cold weather in its three-day run.

The cause of his ire was his red-light start against Kalitta. Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster slowed to 5.227 seconds at 191.10 mph while Kalitta was winning with a 4.569 at 322.11.

"I don't know what happened against Kalitta," Herbert commented. "I think I must've rolled the front wheels a little too far into the starting beam. We should've done better today."

Herbert did begin eliminations from the No. 2 position, thanks to a 4.604-second qualifying run at 316.23 mph on Friday. He added a 4.622 at 316.01 on his last attempt.

In the opening round, Herbert had to pedal the throttle to beat Bobby Lagana with a 6.101 at 269.03.

Herbert - eighth with 376 points - and the Snap-on team return to competition Friday through Sunday at Topeka, Kan., in the Advance Auto Parts Nationals. Herbert won that event two years ago.

First round: Herbert, 6.101 at 269.03 def. Bobby Lagana; Quarterfinals: Kalitta def. Herbert

Race winners: Kenny Bernstein, Top Fuel; Tony Pedregon, Funny Car; Richie Stevens, Pro Stock.
