GOODYEAR SWEEPS ALCOHOL CLASSES AT ENGLISHTOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 20, 2005) -- Randy Meyer and Paul Gill headed a force of six drivers who raced to victory on Goodyear tires in the K & N Supernationals NHRA event at Old Bridge Township Raceway. The win total was the best among tiremakers.
Meyer drove to victory in the Top Alcohol Dragster class and Gill won in Top Alcohol Funny Car. It marked the second time this season that Goodyear-equipped cars have swept the Alcohol classes in NHRA national events. Goodyear shod cars have won an industry-best five times in Dragster in 2005 and four more times in Funny Car. The total combined means teams using Goodyear tires have won more Alcohol class wins in national events than all other tiremakers combined.
Meyer won an all-Goodyear final round, as he beat Ashley Force. It was the second victory for Meyer in national event competition.
Gill ended a dry spell, taking his first national win since 1999.
The other drivers racing to victory on Goodyear tires included Troy Coughlin in Pro Mod, Larry Dixon in Top Fuel, Del Worsham in Funny Car and Jason Line in Pro Stock.
Coughlin's victory was his first in Pro Mod competition.
Dixon won for the 37th time and is the winningest active Top Fuel driver. The win came after he posted the top lap in qualifying; the 25th time he has done that. Dixon beat David Grubnic in the final round.
Worsham defeated Ron Capps in a great final race. The margin of victory was a scant .0374 of a second.
Line defeated Warren Johnson in the Pro Stock final.
