ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Greg Anderson set both ends of the track record to lead the Pro Stock order at the rain-shortened K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Pep Boys at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Shawn Gann is the Pro Stock Bike leader following Friday's first qualifying session before persistent rain showers canceled the remainder of the day's racing action. Both qualifying sessions in Top Fuel and Funny Car and the second session in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Bike were canceled at the $2.1 million race, the eighth of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Anderson drove his Vegas General Construction Pontiac Grand Am to the fastest Pro Stock speed in NHRA history recording a run of 6.723 seconds at 205.91 mph. Anderson's elapsed time was the second quickest in NHRA history, three thousandths of-a-second off the 6.720 national record set by Warren Johnson at Houston Raceway Park in April.
"The thing is no one here has experience running in conditions like this, no one," said Anderson. "If we get another shot and the conditions are the same, then you'll see someone run a 6.68 or 6.69 at 206 mph. I hope it's me."
Gann recorded the second quickest Pro Stock Bike elapsed time in NHRA history when he rode his Gann Speed Suzuki to a 7.069 run at 186.67 to lead the 16-bike order. Gann's pass is second behind Angelle Savoie's 7.049-second national record, which she set at this event last May.
"I hope the rain goes away because I want another shot at running a six-second lap," said Gann. "That run was terrible. We shook the tire and I was on the chip in a few gear changes, so I feel like we left a lot on the table that time."
Professional qualifying continues Saturday at 12:45 p.m. First round eliminations for the King Demon Crown bonus event for Pro Stock begins at 12:30 p.m. The King Demon Crown is a bonus event for the top eight Pro Stock drivers in qualifying over the past season and awards a $50,000 bonus to the winner.
