The sun may have shown brightly at Raceway Park in Old Bridge Township this weekend, but not much luck was shining down on the Team NEC/Auto Club of Southern Calif. Dodge Avenger driven by Gary Densham.
During Friday qualifying the team was working on a pretty good race day tune up when an oil pump problem forced Densham to shut off after the burnout on the second run.
Saturday produced sunny and very warm conditions but Densham managed to run a solid 5.03 @ 303.84mph putting him in the number 9 qualifying position for Sunday. "We felt pretty confident going into raceday, said Densham. We were able to run 5.0's all weekend long."
Sunday brought early morning showers and much cooler temperatures, producing great track conditions. The first round paired Densham against Jim Epler in the Easy Car Dodge Avenger. As Team Manager, Al Leibmann stated, "Gary left first and the car was on a great pass. The 60 ft. times showed the car was on 4.90's pass, but the front wheels wouldn't come down. The car made a move to the right and just crossed the center line.
The Team now heads to Chicago, Ill. for the Inaugural Route 66 Nationals, May 28-31.
