Englishtown, NJ, June 19, 2004 -- For the 23rd time in his career, former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon will enter race day qualified 3rd. Pedregon held on to his run from Friday night of 4.885 seconds at 293.09 mph to claim a top-five spot for the NHRA Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.

During today's first session, Pedregon was on another great run to about the 330-marker when it spun the tires and slowed to an elapsed time of 6.831 seconds at 126.92 mph. In the second session an intake rocker in the valvetrain broke.

"We were looking to run a low 4.90 during that last session today," said Pedregon. "An intake rocker broke which caused the number two cylinder to drop and slowed it down. The track was very warm again today but tomorrow's forecast looks to be cooler. We're very happy to be in the top-three for the second week in a row and we'll look to carry that momentum over to tomorrow."

Pedregon will face Phil Burkart Jr. in the first round of eliminations, scheduled to begin tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. (ET). Pedregon has a 3-2 advantage over Burkart in race day competition. This is Pedregon's 212th career Funny Car race.

Pedregon's teammate and brother Tony Pedregon qualified 2nd with his run from Friday night of 4.856 seconds at 305.01 mph.

ESPN will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage on Sunday, June 20, from 5:00 p.m. -- 7:00 p.m. (ET).
