Englishtown, NJ, June 20, 2004 - Former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon advanced to the quarterfinals today at the NHRA Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.

The Wes Cerny tuned Chevrolet came into today's eliminator qualified 3rd with an elapsed time of 4.885 seconds at 293.09 mph. During the first round of elimination's today, Pedregon defeated Phil Burkart Jr., with an elapsed time of 5.224 seconds at 272.12 mph to Burkart's slower elapsed time of 5.292 seconds at 265.27 mph.

"The car launched hard and we suffered some tire shake which caused me to get on and off the throttle," explained Pedregon. But we got to the finish line first and that's all that counts."

In the second round Pedregon faced Gary Scelzi. In a close battle to the finish, Scelzi crossed the stripe with an elapsed time of 5.407 seconds at 276.41 mph to Pedregon's elapsed time of 5.512 seconds at 264.08 mph.

"Wes made some adjustments to the car and after reviewing the data from the first run, it looks like we over compensated," explained Pedregon. "After speaking with Wes, he showed me where he went the wrong way with the set up. We feel like we let one get away but we'll just continue on and use the information to our advantage in St. Louis.

"We earned a top-eight and we're starting to make great strides," added Pedregon. "Things are really starting to come together for this team. It's just a matter of time before we get to the winner circle."

Pedregon remains 11th in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car points standings.

The next event for the Advance Auto Parts team will be the NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, MO on June 24-27.
