ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., May 18, 2003 - Cruz Pedregon gave Whit Bazemore a good race in the opening round of Sunday's K&N Filters SuperNationals at Raceway Park but couldn't quite catch him.

Pedregon's Advance Auto Parts Funny Car had an elapsed time of 4.898 seconds at 313.51 mph to Bazemore's 4.830 at 322.88. The difference, about six-hundredths of a second, in everyday life is negligible but not in NHRA quarter-mile competition.

"Our car was off the pace a little this weekend," said Pedregon, who was fighting a sinus infection. "We tested earlier in the week at Indianapolis and ran 4.89 there, too. We are about five or six-hundredths off where we should be."

Limited to by Friday rain to two qualifying runs Saturday, Pedregon had a 4.886 at 312.93 mph best that put him 12th overall.

"On the bright side, the car did go down the track again," he added, "but it isn't going down at the performance level we need. I'll get together with Rob (Flynn) and Dave (Fletcher, co-crew chiefs) and see what we need to do before we go to Topeka."

The O'Reilly Summer Nationals, the second of three successive weeks of racing, is scheduled Friday through Sunday at Heartland Park Topeka, followed by the Lucas Oil Route 66 Nationals at Joliet, Ill., May 30-June 1.
