Consistency return to McClenathan's FRAM AirHog dragster Cory Mac qualifies No. 9
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 18, 2005) -- Cory McClenathan, from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., placed the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog Top Fuel dragster in the No. 9 position on the final qualifying ladder for the NHRA K&N SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
McClenathan recorded a best qualifying time of 4.541 seconds at 327.27 mph. Cory Mac, who is No. 5 on the career win list for Top Fuel drivers, will go after his 29th win. He will square off against Morgan Lucas in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow. Lucas qualified No. 8 with an elapsed time of 4.526 seconds.
"We seem to have our consistency back," said McClenathan. "Tomorrow we'll need to step it up a bit while retaining the consistency."
Crew chief Todd Smith added, "We tested this pass Monday and found some things and it made the FRAM AirHog more predictable. I think we got the results we wanted. We definitely made the car more consistent. That last run we were really trying to go for it and the car didn't respond. We're still evaluating that run but we'll be ready for tomorrow."
McClenathan is currently No. 9 in the POWERade Top Fuel point standings, 15 points behind eighth, 65 behind seventh, 78 behind sixth and 116 out of the top five.
At Englishtown, Cory Mac has been to the final round three times, finishing runner-up to Larry Dixon last year He was also runner-up to Joe Amato in 1992 and 1998.
QUALIFYING: McClenathan, in the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog Dragster, begins his quest for the Top Fuel title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m. Time is local Englishtown, N.J. time -- Eastern Time (ET) -- and subject to change at anytime.
