Team Mopar's Allen Johnson Seeks Englishtown Win Amid Hectic Stretch of Racing
Johnson aims for his third final-round appearance of the season and first victory of year at NHRA SuperNationals
Auburn Hills, Mich. -- Team Mopar Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson is in the thick of the busiest stretch of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season, with six races on tap in the next seven weeks. The Mopar Dodge Avenger driver hopes to bank multiple wins during the hectic slate of events ahead, starting with a trip to the winner's circle this weekend at the NHRA SuperNationals, scheduled for June 10--13 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
"I feel like we're going down the stretch here," said Johnson, who is currently second in the NHRA Pro Stock standings, with two runner-up outings this season. "It would be great to win two or three out of the next six races. This Mopar/J&J Racing team didn't show what we've got at the previous event in Chicago [where Johnson exited in the quarterfinals]. We actually struggled a little bit, so we stayed after and tested on Monday and made needed changes. I feel like we're strong again after testing and I think we'll come out at Englishtown and show that we're No. 1 or No. 2 in the pits and hopefully come out and win the race.
"The travel is hard on the road crew, being away all those weeks from their families. For the engine shop, the challenge is just keeping the engines refreshed between races. But when you're doing well and in line to win a race, it takes a lot of that strain away."
Johnson advanced to the semifinals at Englishtown in 2009 and captured his second career No. 1 Qualifier award in 2006 at the venue. The Greeneville, Tenn. native is hoping for even more success in his Mopar HEMI-powered Dodge this weekend.
"We've always run pretty well at Englishtown," said Johnson. "It's supposed to be really hot and grimy this weekend, so we're looking forward to a hot and slick race track. It seems like that's the kind of track we really do well at, so it bodes well for the Mopar Dodge Avenger/J&J Racing/ team."
