HIRATA, WILKERSON BEAT OUT THE COMPETITION AT TRI-STATE RACEWAY
EARLVILLE, Iowa -- The NHRA West Central division closed out its 2007 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season this weekend at Tri-State Raceway. In the end, Dave Hirata of Lowell, Ind., made his way to the winner's circle in Top Alcohol Dragster and Daniel Wilkerson of Springfield, Ill., got the win in Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Hirata, the No. 1 qualifier, faced off against top qualifier Jeff Hamelink, Savage, Minn., in the final. Hirata's 5.454-second, 262.54 mph pass was more than enough to cover Hamelink's 5.593-second, 251.25 mph effort. This was Hirata's second win in as many races. Earville resident Richard Putz suffered a first-round loss to Hirata.
Wilkerson, the 24-year-old son of NHRA Funny Car racer Tim Wilkerson, qualified in the sixth spot but took out defending North Central division champion Mick Snyder in the opening round and reigning West Central division champ Cy Chesterman in the semis. In the final he was slated to take on No. 1 qualifier Andy Bohl of Racine, Wis., but in the semis Bohl experienced some engine trouble and the team was unable to make the call to the final. Wilkerson coasted to a win at 7.831 seconds, 111.22 mph.
Frankfort, Ill., racer Bob Book earned the Comp Eliminator win over Matt Harris, Nebraska City, Neb. Michael Mans, Rogers, Minn., drove his '00 Formula to the win in Super Stock, beating out Brad Haugaard, North Branch, Minn., in his '07 Stratus in the final. Zimmerman, Minn., resident James Findell, behind the wheel of his '73 Duster, got the Stock Eliminator win taking out the '69 Mustang of Lance Line, Cromwell, Minn. Trevor Larson, Starbuck, Minn., beat Anthony Castillo, Grandview, Wash., in the Super Comp final and the Super Gas win went to Jeff Taylor, Evans, Colo., over Cedar Rapids, Iowa's Rick Bowman. Littleton, Colo., Super Street racer took home the trophy beating out Ryan Scheleck, St. Cloud, Minn. In Top Sportsman, Benjamin Board, Spirit Lake, Minn., carried his No. 1 qualifying effort to the win over Rick Sojka Sr., Batavia, Ill., and in Top Dragster, No. 10 qualifier Brent Camerlinck, Leonardsville, Kan., made his wat to the winner's circle at the expense of Mark Grame, Overland Park, Kan. Brian Johnson, Anoka, Minn., aboard his '04 Suzuki grabbed the Sportsman Motorcycle win away form Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn., and his '97 Buell.
This was the last of six races in NHRA West Central division competition but racers can still travel to out-of-division events to earn points toward national and divisional championships. The final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series of the season is scheduled October 19-21 in NHRA's Southeast division.
