The drag racing roots of Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Ed "Ace" McCulloch wind all the way to the 1960s when they began their competitive careers - back when nicknames were as much a part of the sport as nitromethane. They were Funny Car rivals in the 1970s and 1980s although each driver eventually retired from competition in the 1990s after driving a Top Fuel dragster. Prudhomme won four Funny Car championships (1975-78) and 49 races (35 in Funny Car and 14 in Top Fuel) by the time he called it quits in 1994. McCulloch accumulated 22 wins (18 in Funny Car) when he turned his attention to becoming a team manager and crew chief after the 1993 campaign. Prudhomme remained active as a team owner, first with Larry Dixon's Top Fuel dragster (1995), then adding Ron Capps' U.S. Tobacco Co. Camaro Funny Car (1997). The Snake and the Ace joined forces late last year when Prudhomme hired McCulloch as crew chief on Capps' car. Ironically, the two drag racing veterans whose careers paralleled each other will be inducted into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame on March 16 at Gainesville, Fla. "It's an honor to be in our sport's hall of fame," Prudhomme said, "although I feel they should've waited for a while because I still have a lot of racing to do yet with Ron and Larry." Prudhomme has 15 wins as a car owner, eight from Dixon, seven from Capps. "At this point in my life this is really an honor to be included with all the greats in drag racing," said McCulloch. "It's an added bonus to be inducted at the same time as Prudhomme." Prudhomme and McCulloch each had some success at Gainesville Raceway during their driving days. Prudhomme won five Gatornationals titles as a driver and one as an owner (Dixon, 1995). McCulloch has four wins. This is a busy year for Prudhomme and hall of fame honors. He joins the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on April 13 at Talladega, Ala. Other drivers inducted at that time will be Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Nelson Piquet, Craig Breedlove and the late Ayrton Senna.
