Tom Martino bettered his previous time in three of the four qualifying sessions for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His best effort came in his last attempt on Saturday afternoon, when he posted an elapsed time of 7.393 seconds with a top speed of 185.66 mph. This placed the Century 21 Pro Stock Firebird 12th on Sunday's final eliminations ladder, and paired Martino with current Pro Stock points leader Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the first round. Martino has a career record of 4-2 against Coughlin, having won on a hole-shot in their most recent encounter in Madison, Illinois last month. Without the benefit of lane choice, and on a very tricky racing surface, Martino knows he will need a strong effort from the very start of he is to be successful on Sunday. "Although we made gains on our runs, we're still not 100 percent happy with how our car is responding to the adjustments we make. The good news is that we were able to use our horsepower and get ourselves in the show. But to go some rounds tomorrow, we'll need to make good runs every time down the track. The potential is there, and if we can hit the set-up, the Century 21 Firebird should be fast. Although the cooler temperatures that are forecast for tomorrow will make everyone faster, it should help us by making it a little easier to tune the car.

"We have a tough opponent in Jeggie in the first round tomorrow, and I'm sure he remembers our taking him out in the first round in Madison, so he'll be ready for us. We won't have lane choice, so we'll have to be perfect from the starting line to the finish line. Hopefully, we'll be able to start with a repeat of a couple of weeks ago, and build on it from there."
