Bandimere Speedway is a racetrack of extreme opposites. On one hand, its location on the side of a mountain outside of Denver makes it one of the most picturesque on the entire NHRA POWERade circuit. However, this beauty comes at a cost, as the extremely thin air challenges tuners in virtually every category.
Tom Hammonds faced this difficult challenge head-on at this weekend's Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals. Although his Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier posted competitive times on each of his four attempts, making better runs each time down the track, his best effort of 7.343 seconds with a top speed of 187.65 mph found him outside the field at the conclusion of qualifying.
"We made radical changes to our tune-up throughout qualifying, focusing on the jetting of the carburetors. The Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier responded, running better down low and through the transition, but it still didn't run the back half as well as it normally does. Our last run on Saturday would have been a good starting point if we were just testing, but right now our focus is on packing up and heading to Seattle (site of next weekend's race).
"We had a few things to take care of before this race which prevented us from testing here at Bandimere Speedway, which put us behind in our set-up. To be honest, I really don't have the experience yet to make changes by the seat of my pants at a facility as unique as this one and expect them to be 100% effective in an extremely competitive class like Pro Stock.
"We are still a young team in our first full year of competition, and we're still learning. I know that with every race I am gaining valuable experience as a driver and an engine tuner. We see this weekend as just a bump in the road, and we fully expect our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier to come back strong in Seattle next weekend."
