Pedregon falls in final round at Mile-High Nationals.

Highlights: Del Worsham beat Tony Pedregon in a classic Funny Car final Sunday in the 23rd annual Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Worsham's victory, his third of the season, broke up Team Castrol's 1-2-3 stranglehold on the NHRA POWERade point standings. Worsham moved past Pedregon into third place behind John Force and Gary Densham.

Force, the 11-time reigning series champion and 101-time winner, was upset in the second round by Dean Skuza while Densham was taken out of competition without turning a tire when an ignition problem left him sitting in the staging lanes while first round opponent Whit Bazemore drove to victory.

It was Pedregon's third final round in the last five years at Banidmere. He won the Mile-High Nationals in 1998 and 1999. Force won a year ago.

Race results: Beat Johnny Gray; lost to Dean Skuza.

Notable: Retained first place in the POWERade point standings.

Quotable: "It just wasn't our day. Densham couldn't get his ol' heap started in round one, we lost in round two and then Worsham beat Tony in the final. I keep telling everybody that there are a lot of good teams out there and there's not any better than the Worsham family."

Qualifying position and performance: 3rd at 5.091, 293.86 mph.

Race results: Beat Ron Capps, Whit Bazmore, Dean Skuza; lost to Del Worsham.

Notable: Closed the gap between himself and teammates John Force and Gary Densham but also relinquished third place to Del Worsham.

Quotable: "To get that close and then not close the deal, it's frustrating. But we know we have a really good race car so we'll go get 'em in Seattle."

Qualifying position and performance: 6th at 5.164, 296.57 mph.

Race results: Lost to Whit Bazemore.

Quotable: "There are no good ways to lose but it's really frustrating not even to get to the starting line. The good thing is we held on to second place."

Qualifying position and performance: Did not participate.

ROB SLAVINSKI, Castrol Super Clean dragster, Super Comp Eliminator
