MORRISON, Col - Federal Mogul Dragster pilot Shelly Howard lost a close one in the second round of the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado. Howard won this event in '98.

The Tulsa, Oklahoma driver qualified No. 5 with a 5.866/241.50 and set low e.t. of the first round en route to a victory over the A/fueler of Bruce Bowler with a 5.832/241.45.

In the second round, parts failure closed the door for Howard in what might have been a pretty close race against current Division 5 leader Billy Bybee. Howard slowed to a 5.850/238.09 when a wrist pin broke three seconds into the run. Bybee went on to win with a 5.761/248.43.

Howard said, "We were right there together when a wrist pin gave out three seconds into the run. It kicked one rod out, but everything is repairable. We were having a real good weekend up to this round. The car was running good, and the crew performed flawless all weekend."

"We are just going to have to wait until we get back home and look over everything to see where we will go next. If nothing else our next definite race will be the Hallsville [Texas] rainout."

Howard is qualified No. 2 for that race, and will face No. 7 qualifier Bill Ancona in the first round. Eliminations will be ran on Saturday, August 19. For more news on the Howard team, visit their website at www.ShellyHoward.com.
