Denver, Colo. (July 15): After finishing qualifying for the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals, Tony Schumacher and his Exide teammates will start from the No. 5 qualifying position for Sunday's final eliminations.
Met again with 90 degree temperatures, Schumacher started the first session of the day as the No. 4 qualifier. He was able to run a 4.992 e.t. at 284.75 mph, which was fourth quick of the session and he was able to keep his previous qualifying spot.
"We are trying to get a handle on these conditions," said Schumacher, "depending on what the weather does on Sunday there may be some interesting races."
In the final qualifying session, Schumacher was bumped to the No. 5 spot, but still had a chance to improve his position. He was only able to muster a 4.886 second run at 299.00 mph and remained fifth.
"The track really fooled us," said Schumacher, "we gave it a whole lot more clutch to see what it would do and it still wasn't enough."
"At this altitude, our numbers sure don't mean what you think they should mean."
Schumacher's first round opponent will be Doug Herbert, who qualified with a 5.015 e.t. at 282.78 mph. Gary Scelzi, the current points leader over Schumacher, finished with the No. 1 position and is on the same side of the ladder as Schumacher.
"It would be nice to get a chance to run Gary (Scelzi) in the semifinals and make up some ground on him in points," said Schumacher, "but we have to take one round at a time and there's a good chance we will have to run Larry Dixon."
Final eliminations are scheduled for 11AM MT. ESPN2 will televise final eliminations. Check local listings for times.
