Romine To Utilize NHRA Tune-Up At Mile-High Nationals
MORRISON, CO (July 17, 2001) -- Paul Romine and his CARQUEST Auto Parts Top Fuel team will get an extra boost, literally, July 20 - 22 at the 22nd annual NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway, just west of Denver, Colorado. The team will replace its normal IHRA engine combination, which utilizes 25% overdrive on the supercharger, with a more aggressive NHRA tune-up that crew chief Mike McLaughlin used last season at Denver that propelled Don Lampus to a semi-final finish.
"We've got the IHRA tune-up where we want it to be with performance so now when we come over to NHRA events, we can be real teammates with Doug (Herbert, team owner) and use the same type of tune-up and try to help each other," said Romine. "Last year Mike had a good tune-up with Lampus at Denver and we'll combine his knowledge with Doug's team and should have something to play with."
Romine ran 4.69-seconds at 318 miles-per-hour July 14 at an IHRA race in upstate New York and earned a runner-up finish. He is currently second in the IHRA point standings, but has yet to win an NHRA round this season.
"We've been behind the eight ball in NHRA all year with the limitations of our tune-up, but now that we're going to use a NHRA combination, we should pick it up performance wise right away," Romine said.
Romine last competed at the Mile-High Nationals in 1999 when he defeated current car owner Doug Herbert in round one with a holeshot before losing to Cory McClenathan in the second round.
Bandimere Speedway is 10 miles west of Denver just north of the historic town of Morrison. From Denver, take Interstate 70 west to I-470 and travel south to the Morrison Road exit. Take Morrison Road west to Rooney Road and go north to the track.
