Dixon Races to No. 2 Qualifying Spot at Bandimere Speedway
MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2004) -- Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to its best qualifying finish of the 2004 NHRA season Saturday at Bandimere Speedway, racing to the No. 2 qualifying position after recording a run of 4.729 seconds at 300.00 mph.
The two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion used a Dick LaHaie tune-up to post a run of 4.884 seconds at 289.57 mph behind the wheel of his Miller Lite rail on Saturday's opening run, before improving to a performance of 4.729 at 300.00 to claim the second qualifying position. All teams were limited to just two qualifying efforts after both of Friday's scheduled sessions were washed out at the Colorado facility.
"I think this is great progress for our team," Dixon said. "It makes you feel pretty good that you can come up with only two qualifying runs and qualify second. We also improved after the first run which is good.
"These aren't the easiest of conditions. You don't have a baseline. That's where you see the real good crew chiefs, the Dick LaHaies, the Tim Richards, people like that that can hit a setup right from the get-go. I'm real proud of the team."
Dixon aims to win his third race in four years at Bandimere Speedway when he battles No. 15 qualifier Mitch King in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations. Dixon has a 3-1 career mark versus King.
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, July 17, and broadcast 150 minutes of final eliminations coverage at 9 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, July 18.
