MORRISON, CO. (July 18) - The 2002 NHRA POWERade defending champion Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite dragster qualified No.4 after the first day of racing Friday at the 24th Annual Mopar Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway (July 18-20th). On his only qualifying run of the day, Dixon made a pass of 4.879 ET with a speed of 302.14 miles per hour.
Up against Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools dragster, the Don Prudhomme owned dragster put forth and incredible effort despite the challenging Denver conditions. However, Dixon time of 4.879 ET (302.14 mph) was beat by Kalitta's 4.821 ET (299.13 mph). Dixon received the No. 4 qualifying spot, his first of the season. The second session of Top Fuel qualifying was cancelled due to local rain and thundershowers.
"We had a cylinder out right from the start," said Assistant Crew Chief Donny Bender. ."Number three went out. We're always fighting with that one, especially with the air like this. We thought we made enough adjustments, but didn't. So we'll adjust a little more and it should run pretty good tomorrow."
With the down time between St. Louis and Denver the team was kept quite busy. "We made sure we had everything, packed and at the shop just in case we need something shipped," said Bender. "We have a third race car ready, sitting at the shop just in case there's a problem."
Two qualifying sessions remain on Saturday (3:00 PM & 6:00 PM) while Sunday's eliminations are scheduled for a 12:30 PM start.
ESPN will air qualifying starting on Saturday from 7-9:00PM ET with final round coverage of the 24th Annual Mile High Nationals airing on Sunday July20th from 2:30-3:30PM ET.
