DENVER (July 21) --NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon saw his chances of extending his commanding 157-point lead vanish when opponent, Paul Romine reached the finish line first in their opening round battle in the 23rd annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway.

Dixon, the defending Mile-High Nationals champion, gave his Don Prudhomme Snake Racing Miller Lite Dragster a tremendous effort pedaling a couple of times down the quarter-mile trying to gain traction, however he simply ran out of racetrack as his ran a time of 5.065 seconds, 280.02 mph fell to Romine's 5.004, 280.14 mph.

"I think we just missed it as far as the clutch setup because it went out there and showed numbers it wanted run a 4.80 ET," said Dixon. "Obviously, the track couldn't hold it and we spun the tires. I pedaled it a couple of times trying to catch him and couldn't do it, although we still ran 5.06 time."

Dixon and the Miller Lite/Mac Tools team have a total of 1,186 points and maintain a 119-point lead over second place Kenny Bernstein. The Miller Lite group will move on now to the second stage of the NHRA three-race 'Western Swing' taking them next to the Pacific Raceways in nearby Seattle for the Lucas Oil Nationals on July 26 - 28.
