BECKMAN BAGS NO. 10 IN DENVER QUALIFYING

MORRISON, Colo. (July 12, 2008) - Jack Beckman drove the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car into the No. 10 position for the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in only three of four qualifying runs he completed.

Beckman's quickest pass of 4.252 seconds at 292.65 mph came in the final qualifying session today under a hot Denver sun. His other consistent passes were a 4.265/291.76 (No. 1), a 4.260/293.35 (No. 6) and an unfortunate DNS (did not start) in the third round when an ignition wire shorted out after the burnout.

"The most consistent three-run car out there," said Beckman. "It was unfortunate that on run three we had that ignition wire short out. But the blessing in disguise is it happened on Saturday not Sunday. And the cool thing is: look how good we recovered. We went back up there with a different ignition system and the car went right down the race track.

"The interesting thing is this Valvoline/MTS Dodge is running so good from 60 feet on. If we can just get it to leave a little bit harder, we will be one of the quickest cars here this weekend."

As for running to 1000 feet for the first time in NHRA nitro history: "I'm actually kind of liking it," he said. "We're going mid-4.290s here, so it's not like you go, Wow, this car is slow now. And the reality is, when we're shutting off, these cars are still accelerating pretty good. So, as a driver, it doesn't take any of the thrill away. But, a couple of people have already gotten bit. A couple lifted early, a couple lifted late. You talk about routine as a driver and you go up there and program yourself to do the same thing, and it's bitten a few of the nitro drivers here this weekend.

"It might be interesting tomorrow."

Beckman faces off against No. 7 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday.
