Round wins means points for Will during eliminations tomorrow
MORRISON, Colo. (July 14, 2007) -- Driving her KB Racing-owned, Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel dragster tuned by Jim Oberhofer, Hillary Will finished in the No. 11 qualifying position at the 28th annual NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals being contested this weekend at Bandimere Speedway, the highest altitude track on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
With family looking on, the Fortuna, Calif., native ran an elapsed time of 4.687 seconds during Friday's opening qualifying session. In the cooler air on Friday evening, Will's KB Racing dragster shut down as she hit the throttle and she came to a stop on the track, receiving no time for the run.
In the first qualifying session on Saturday, after Pro Stock cars faced air temperatures in the mid-90s and track temperatures over 125 degrees, the Top Fuel cars were greeted with cloud cover that reduced the air temperature to the mid-80s, track temperatures to around the 110 degree mark, humidity around 33 percent, and an adjusted altitude of approximately 7,766-feet. Will then proceeded to run the best of her three qualifying sessions thus far, a 4.685-second pass, which placed her in the top half of the field.
She lowered that mark in the last qualifying session, recording a 4.681 second pass after a rain delay of approximately one and one-half hours. Even though her run was her best of the weekend, Will dropped three spots and ended the four qualifying sessions in the 11th position.
Currently Will is within sight of the eighth position in points in the first segment of the season-long Countdown to the Championship. Tomorrow her goal is to go rounds -- the more the better. Her brass ring in the NHRA POWERade point standing is a spot in the eight drivers that will continue into the second segment of the Countdown to the Championship once the first segment ends.
She opens eliminations tomorrow afternoon against Brandon Bernstein, who qualified No. 6. Will advanced to the quarterfinals last year in her first trip to Bandimere Speedway as a Top Fuel driver. A strong showing this time out would go a long way to achieving a spot in the top eight.
