RIVAS MAKES IT TO SECOND ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS
DENVER, Colo., July 13, 2008- Chris Rivas rode the G2 Motorsports Drag Specialties S&S Cycle V-Twin
Pro Stock Motorcycle to the second round of eliminations at the 29th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals here at Bandimere Speedway.
The 41-year-old Pro Stock Motorcycle rider beat Angelle Sampey in the first round with a 7.335 e.t. at 180.60- mph. Rivas was up against Peggy Llewellyn in the second round and would have beat her had it not been for a red light foul due to his -.005 reaction time. His e.t. was 7.355 at 179.23-mph, as opposed to Llewellyn's 15.832 e.t. at 45.77- mph. He had the lowest elapsed time for the two elimination rounds.
"The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing's Bandimere Mopar Mile-High Nations is a great, but challenging race track," said Crew Chief George Smith. "It took us all four qualifying runs to figure out the correct tune up combination, but by eliminations our Drag Specialties S&S G2 Motorsports Pro Stock Motorcycle was the motorcycle to beat."
It has been a challenging weekend for the team, due to the 5,860 feet above sea level elevation of the track. The team lacked the necessary data properly set the clutch for this altitude for the four qualifying rounds. By race day the team had finally achieved the right combination of tuning, leaving it up to Rivas.
"Chris was riding very well, but of course it takes green lights to win," added Smith. "We're all disappointed." "Obviously I'm disappointed in my performance today," said the Fresno, Calif. native. "But we need to learn from our mistakes, and I'll do my best to make sure it doesn't happen again."
Trying to remain positive, Smith looked ahead to the next Pro Stock Motorcycle race, the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif.
"We feel good and confident about our team's progress and ability to compete. We're going to put this behind us and we're eager to go into Sonoma."
The next Pro Stock Motorcycle race in the 2008 NHRA POWERade series is the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., leaving four races until the Countdown to One championship begins.
