DENVER, Colo. (July 15, 2007) -- Cruz Pedregon and his Advance Auto Parts NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car Team came to the Mile-High Nationals with hopes of continuing the momentum gained from a final round appearance last weekend in Bristol. Facing thin air and hot temperatures, they narrowly missed making the field for Sunday's Final Eliminations.
"We had some help this weekend from others which kept us in 8th position in Championship points," explained Pedregon, the 1992 NHRA Funny Car World Champion. "We are definitely looking to rebound in Seattle this weekend."
Pedregon and his veteran tuner and crew chief, Wayne Dupuy know the cooler, Friday night qualifying session often represents the best opportunity to earn a starting position in the final16-car Funny Car field. After four attempts, the team would find themselves watching from the sidelines during Sunday's Final Elimination rounds.
"The Friday night session presented great conditions," said Pedregon, the 1993 Mile-High Event Champion.b^0x001cWe were bumped out on Friday which meant a little extra pressure on us to make it into the field on Saturday."
Rain delayed the start of the final qualifying session for well over an hour on Saturday.Crew chief, Wayne Dupuy and his Advance Auto Parts team went to work adjusting to the cooler weather conditions to try and put Pedregon in Sunday's final-round eliminations.
"We needed to get in on Friday night," said Dupuy. "The delayed start of the final round of qualifying gave us another opportunity Saturday night, but we just got a little too aggressive and dropped a cylinder. We'll get back after it in Seattle."
