ANTRON BROWN EARNS FIFTH NO. 1 QUALIFIER OF 2010 SEASON SATURDAY AT DENVER
MORRISON, Colo. (July 24, 2010) - Antron Brown powered his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to its fifth No. 1 qualifying award of the season Saturday afternoon at Bandimere Speedway. Brown's 3.961-second elapsed time from Friday evening remained the quickest pass in qualifying.
Brown, who earned the provisional pole on Friday evening with a lap of 3.961 seconds at 286.19 mph on Thunder Mountain, lost traction behind the wheel of his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster car on Saturday's first qualifying attempt. Brown slowed to a pass of 4.633 seconds at 172.81 mph to remain atop the Top Fuel order. The Matco-backed rail then posted a run of 4.518 at 185.43 on its final qualifying effort. It is Brown's second consecutive and third career pole at the Denver race and his 26th career pole and 15th in Top Fuel.
"I'm glad I'm not a betting man because I would have bet my house that the 3.96 from last night wouldn't have held for that top spot," Brown joked. "It's just tricky out there. Our car had good early numbers both times today, but the track just wouldn't hold it. It's going to be rough out there tomorrow. Five of the top six cars in the points are on our side of the ladder. Whoever wins this race tomorrow will have earned it and I think our Matco Tools team is Army Strong and up to the challenge."
Brown will face off against No. 16 qualifier Terry Haddock in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (MT) on Sunday at Bandimere Speedway. Brown is 2-0 in his career against Haddock. They have yet to meet this season.
