Taylor reaches semifinals at Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Dennis Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts backed team used consistency once again to reach the semifinals of this past weekend's Fram-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Taylor was narrowly edged out by eventual winner and new national-record holder Bucky Austin.
Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., qualified the his Ora Vasquez tuned Camaro fourth with a 5.654 at 252.80 mph. In round one, he defeated Hannes Warnhart with a 5.654 at 252.76 mph, and then used a 5.636 at 251.58 mph to take out Jon Capps in the second round. In his semifinal matchup with Austin, Taylor jumped out to a substantial lead off the line, but his 5.645 at 252.80 mph was not enough to hold off Austin's 5.571 at 258.22.
"I didn't see him for about 1318 feet," said Taylor. "In that last two feet, he stuck his nose out in front and took the win. We ran our own race, stuck with our consistency game plan and made them beat us. Unfortunately that's what happened, but I think it's a testament to Ora Vasquez and this team that the car just keeps on going down the track like a bracket car. We were virtually locked into the 5.60's all weekend. Everything is clicking right now, and we're just like one big family. We had a tough side of the ladder, but all the cars are tough out here. We've gotten used to winning here lately, but making the semifinals is nothing to get down about."
Taylor's semifinal finish kept him in second place nationally, and the question of chasing the World Championship keeps coming to him.
"I'm getting a lot of people stop by and ask if we're going to chase the World Championship," Taylor explained. "We'd love to, but at this point, I think we are going to stick with our original gameplan of the races we set out to run this year. Who knows, we may get hot and win a few more races, and if that happens, we may pick up another race somewhere. We just want to continue to do our best and finish as high as we can for our great sponsor Plumbing Concepts and our great group of associate sponsors in invigor8 Energy Drink, Valvoline, Mickey Thompson Tires, Metro Moulded Parts, Shaker Shirts, Ultimate Designs, Bear State Heat and Air, Adam's Polishes and Taylor Motorsport Products."
The next event for the Plumbing Concepts team will be the biggest of them all, the 50th Annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
