POMONA, Calif. - Despite having an up and down year, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car veteran Dennis Taylor and his Cooner Wire backed team are looking to close the year out strong in front of their hometown crowd during this weekend's AAA Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif. To assist the team accomplish that feat, Taylor has enlisted the services of veteran tuner Ora Vasquez for the weekend.
Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, just down the road in Anaheim, Calif., hopes that the addition of Vasquez to his team this weekend will help by adding a 'fresh set of eyes' to the situation.
"We're bringing in Ora Vasquez this weekend," said Taylor. "We like to look at it as an addition to the team; nobody is getting fired or losing their job. We just thought that it would be good to have someone else there to take a look at what we have going. When that person is as experienced as Ora Vasquez is, it's a real plus to have them in your corner. Over the last week, he's already found a few things that he thinks will make a difference, so hopefully we'll go out there and step it up."
Taylor also wants to do good because the event is at his home track, but is also just miles away from his primary sponsor Cooner Wire's headquarters in Chatsworth, Calif.
"We really want to make a good showing for Cooner Wire," stated Taylor. "All the Pomona races are always big for us because all of our sponsors are based out here. In addition to Cooner, we have Plumbing Concepts, Valvoline, Pepsi, Shaker Shirts, Ultimate Designs, Bear State Heat and Air, and Taylor Motorsport Products. They have stuck with us all year, and we're going to give our best shot for them."
