Taylor looking to stay hot in Phoenix

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Recent K&N Filters Winternationals Top Alcohol Funny Car winner Dennis Taylor will be looking to stay hot during this weekend's NHRA Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Firebird Raceway just outside of Phoenix. Taylor, who is coming off two-straight national event final round appearance, is hoping to enjoy that same level of success in the ultra-competitive Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car wars with his Plumbing Concepts backed Camaro.

Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., hopes pre-race testing on Thursday will help the team gain a competitive advantage this weekend.

"We by no means think just because we won the Winternationals, we can march right in here and win again," said Taylor. "This is a whole new race and everyone starts from ground zero. We're going to test some new things for the fact that Division 7 Funny Car is so tough, you have to try stay ahead of the game constantly. Our first concern this weekend is just qualifying, then we'll worry about the race. With the caliber of cars out here, even just qualifying isn't guaranteed."

Despite not giving his team an advantage on the track, Taylor feels the team's recent successes have helped his team on a psychological level.

"This team has stuck together, and we've had some low spots over the past couple of years, but we've always kept on working," stated Taylor. "We always knew we could do it, that was a big part of our motivation; the potential was there. To go out there and finally accomplish one of our goals as a team in winning a national event has just made us that more hungry to win again. To see the motivation of the team, motivates me as a driver. With this team lead by Ora Vasquez and great sponsors like Plumbing Concepts, Valvoline, Pepsi, Mickey Thompson Tires, Metro Moulded Parts, Shaker Shirts, Ultimate Designs, Bear State Heat and Air, Adam's Polishes and Taylor Motorsport Products behind me, I think the sky is the limit for this team."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
