Wells shooting for another win at Route 66
JOLIET, Ill. - Hot off a win three weeks ago at the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster veteran David Wells will be shooting for his first divisional win of the year during this weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. With the Division 5 opener just around the corner, Wells and his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team hope to get a run on the season.
Wells, who helps run the family's ice cream business in LeMars, Iowa, has had some of his strongest outings in his career since signing six time World Championship winning crew chief Norm Grimes. Two weeks ago at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Wells ran a career best 5.36 second elapsed time in round two. Unfortunately for Wells, it was on the losing end of A/Fuel Dragster driver Alan Bradshaw's sub-national record 5.19. Wells hopes to continue the consistent 5.3 second performances this weekend at Route 66 Raceway, a track known for it's stellar traction.
"We just want to continue on the momentum we've had from the past few races," said Wells. "Since we've brought Norm on board, we have consistently been one of the quickest blown cars out there. We've had success at this track in the past, and we're going to go out there this weekend and try our best to keep up with the A/Fuelers."
With cool conditions forecasted, Wells feels he should be able to return to the 5.30's this weekend.
"This track is always pretty good," stated Wells. "If its cool this weekend, we should be able to put it in the 5.30's. There's probably going to be several cars in the .30's this weekend, so we'll see."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
