Wells clinches championship with win in Noble

NOBLE, Okla. - Three-time NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion David Wells will get to add another 'time' to his title next year as he clinched another Division 5 title by winning this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer at Thunder Valley Raceway Park just outside of Oklahoma City, Okla. The win allowed him to edge out last year's champion Alan Bradshaw, who clinched the World Championship this weekend as well.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Norm Grimes tuned Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" entry second in the field with a 5.475 at 260.19. In round one he defeated with a 5.440 at 263.46 mph and then took out Gene Snow with a 5.433 at 265.33 mph in the semifinals. In the finals, he squared off against Steve Federlin and took the win with a 5.424 at 264.47 mph, clinching his fourth championship.

"Our goals for this year was to win the World Championship and the Division 5 Championship," said Wells. "Alan [Bradshaw] beat us out for the World Championship, but we beat him in Division 5, so that means a lot to us. I can't say enough Norm Grimes and my team - Doug, Ladon, Randy and Mike. They have given me a championship level car, which makes my job a lot easier."

Wells intends to finish out the year strong with stops at next weekend's O'Reilly Nationals, a Division 7 LODRS event and the AAA Auto Club Finals in Pomona.

"If we can't be No. 1, we're going to try our best to take the No. 2 spot," stated Wells. "The car is running well right now, so hopefully we can make that happen."
