Wells makes quarterfinals in Chicago.

JOLIET, Ill. - Defending three-time NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion David Wells made the quarterfinals during this past weekend's Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals presented by Racing Champions at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster 15th in the quickest field in the history of the class with a 5.463 second elapsed time at 260.36 mph. In round one, he used a holeshot to upset No. 2 qualifier Michael Gunderson, running a 5.521 at 254.71 mph to Gunderson's quicker-but-later 5.491 at 241.02 mph. In round two, he lost to Ken Perry.

"We had a decent weekend," said Wells. "Obviously, we would have liked
to do better. We didn't hurt anything, and we are still moving in the
right direction. Hopefully we can step it up in Dallas."

The next race for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will be the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex just outside of Dallas in two weeks.
