Wells going for double win this weekend.
JOLIET, Ill. - Defending three-time NHRA Division 5 Champion David Wells will be racing in the drag racing equivalent of a double-header this weekend at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. Not only will he be competing in this weekend's Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals presented by Racing Champions, but will also represent Division 5 in the Jegs Sportsman All-Stars race which will be held on Saturday.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, and his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team are gearing up for what will hopefully be a long race for them this weekend.
"This is a big event," said Wells. "Normally at a national event you only have to make seven runs between qualifying and eliminations if you make the finals. This weekend, with the All-Star race, you could go nine rounds; two qualifiers on Friday, three rounds of the All-Star race on Saturday, and four rounds of the normal race on Sunday. You really have to gear up for it. You have to have everything in top shape and ready to go. We are hoping to make those nine runs this weekend."
The Jegs Sportsman All-Stars race pits the top drivers from NHRA's seven geographic divisions and the winner from the previous year's event in an eight car showdown. Drivers collect points all year towards being selected as their division's All-Star representative. Despite being out of contention for this season's Division 5 Championship, Wells hopes to make up for it with an All-Star win.
"We've had some tough breaks this year," stated Wells. "We could really make up for it by winning this weekend's All-Star race. The air and track are going to be good, and when you put that with eight of the top cars in the country, it should be a good race. We just hope to come out on top."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars. The Jegs Sportsman All-Star event will be held on Saturday, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
