Engine backfire derails Wells in final
BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster pilot David Wells came just one round short of picking up the win during this past weekend's Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Wells experienced a freak incident when his engine backfired during the burnout in the final, exploding the supercharger burst panels, which are designed to prevent a severe explosion.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Norm Grimes tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster third in the field with a 5.444 second pass at 262.49 mph. In round one, he defeated Ed Schmeekle with a 5.418 at 261.22 mph, and then took out Todd Datweiler in the semifinals with a 5.508 at 259.21 mph. In the final, Wells squared off with No. 1 qualifier Bill Reichert's injected-nitro machine. As Wells went to perform his burnout, the engine backfired and ended his day. Reichert soloed to a 5.390 at 274.16 mph.
"It was just a freak deal," said Wells. "We did everything the same way we normally do, and it just backfired as soon as I went to give it throttle for the burnout. We haven't had a chance to really examine everything yet, but we will go over everything very thoroughly before Denver."
"The rest of the weekend went pretty well," Wells continued. "The conditions kept on changing between the green track and the intermittent rains. We had a tune-up in it we think would have ran another low . 40 or high .30 for the final, but we just didn't get to find out."
Despite not getting the win, the runner-up finish moved Wells into third place nationally and within ten points of current Division 5 points leader Alan Bradshaw, who lost in round one.
The next race for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/"Plain Vanilla" team will be race three of the Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver, June 18-20.
