ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 10, 2003) - Whit Bazemore, who often shines in Friday evening qualifying in his Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus Funny Car, had a disappointing run this evening, a 5.812/178.11, which did not surpass his 4.955/314.24 run from this afternoon's qualifying session in the heat of the day (good for No. 3). This placed him No. 8 on the qualifying chart, with two more sessions scheduled for tomorrow.

"We shook and pedaled it," said Bazemore, who is seeking his first Funny Car championship and is second to Tony Pedregon by 94 points. "I knew by that point we weren't going to improve on our .95.

"We were going out there to try to be No. 1 qualifier," he said. "Any time you don't go down the track at night, when conditions are most favorable for a good run, it's disappointing. Quite honestly, with (crew chief) Lee Beard and (co-crew chief) Dan Olson, Mike Neff (Scelzi's crew chief) and everybody else, as well as Matco Tools and Dodge, we've been pretty successful on Friday nights since I've been here. This is a rare thing for us.

"We have something going on when the track gets better; we're struggling . Hopefully, tomorrow the sun will be out, which I think it will be, and it will be fine."
