Ennis, Texas (Pre-Race) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet S-10, arrives at this weekend 15th Annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals in Dallas, Texas closing in on a top ten spot in the Pro Stock Truck points.
For the past four races, the goal of the RW Performance team has been to reclaim the top ten position that slipped away for then back in March. Since June Whisnant and his team have been within striking distance, and have bounced back and forth between the 12th and 13th positions. With only 76 points separating John Lingenfelter in 10th, Larry Seay in 11th, and Whisnant in 12th; one bad run could place anyone of these competitors out of the running for the coveted Winston prize money, and a place on the stage at Universal Studios.
The RW Performance teams plan for getting that top ten spot is: more of the same. They want to keep the momentum they gained in Topeka and Memphis going here in Dallas and on to Pomona in November.
"We are going to go to Dallas and keep doing what we have been doing," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "We were running well in Memphis. All our numbers looked good and where improving with every run. We are happy with the way the truck is running and we are going to leave it alone.
"The top spots in the points are pretty much sewed up. It is going to be from about seventh to tenth that is really going to be a dog fight. If anyone in the seventh through twelfth or thirteenth in the points makes a mistake in these last two races, they could end up finishing outside the top ten.
"Right now our goal is the same as we have had for the last couple races; to get into the top ten in points by the end of the season. We need to qualify well and go some rounds on Sunday to do that.
"Here in Dallas we will be concentrating on gaining points and not slipping. We are doing everything in our power to not make any mistakes. We gained points on the number ten spot in Memphis. We are going to try to do the same here in Dallas this weekend.
"It was here in Dallas last year, where we really started to run good. So, we have good data from the track. That will enable to us to set the truck up before we get the racetrack. The weather should be good this weekend: not too hot, or too cold. The racetrack itself is pretty good and should not throw us any curves.
"I feel confident in my crew and my equipment coming in to this race. I think we have a good chance of qualifying this S-10 in the top half of the field.
"On Sunday, we will have to keep lane choice to go rounds. We have the horsepower to do that. It will be up to me to drive this truck to the later rounds, and if we are on our game, maybe drive it all the way to the final. "
Qualifying at the 15th Annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals in Ennis, Texas gets under way on Friday Oct 20, and continues on Saturday Oct. 21. Eliminations will take place on Sunday Oct. 22 at 11:00 AM CST.
