Johnson Jr. Qualifies Seventh at Dallas

ENNIS, Texas. (Sept. 25, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. posted his best qualifying position since mid-July Saturday after the five-time NHRA winner qualified his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo seventh at the Texas Motorplex.

The fourth-year Don Prudhomme Racing driver made two solid passes to finish qualifying at the Texas facility on Saturday afternoon when he powered to a pass of 4.923 seconds at 315.27 mph on his opening effort of the day. Johnson, one of 13 drivers to have earned victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, used a Mike Green tune-up to record his best pass of the weekend when he blasted his Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.848 at 320.97 to place him seventh in the Funny Car order. The 4.848-second elapsed time was Johnson's quickest pass since the 85-percent nitromethane rule was implemented at the Seattle race in late July.

"This is what we've been shooting for all season, to put a string of runs together and qualify in the top half of the field," Johnson said. "We've made a lot of progress at the last few races. I'm really happy with the performance. It shows that the testing and all the work that the guys have put in is paying off."

The Skoal Racing driver will match up against No. 10 qualifier Eric Medlen in round one of Funny Car eliminations at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. Johnson is 1-2 versus the 2004 Rookie of the Year candidate this season.
