JOHNSON JR. RACES SKOAL RACING FLOPPER TO NO. 10 SPOT AT MOTORPLEX
ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 8, 2005) Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the 10th qualifying position Saturday at Texas Motorplex as qualifying concluded for the 20th annual O! 146;Reilly Fall Nationals. The six-time NHRA winner recorded a qualifying-best run of 4.772-seconds.
Johnson, who opened qualifying at the storied Texas quarter mile with a 4.772-second effort on Friday afternoon, drove to a 5.844-second pass on Saturday's first qualifying attempt after the Skoal Racing flopper lost traction. The Iowa native then made a solid pass on his final qualifying effort of the weekend when Johnson's Monte Carlo stopped the Texas Motorplex timers in 4.851 seconds at 311.99 mph to finish 10th in the 16-car order.
"The last pass was actually a pretty decent one," Johnson said. "It dropped a hole (cylinder) about 500-feet into the run. We addressed the tire smoking problem and I think we can go down there and run a high 4.70 in the first round. Even racing John Force, I'm as confident as I can be. We qualified ok, but we've got the setup to race on Sunday."
Johnson will battle 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force in the first round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday morning at the Motorplex. This marks the third consecutive race where Johnson and Force will have met during eliminations.
